Tea Party Express Launches Campaign Supporting a Balanced Budget Amendment, Convention of States

Sacramento, CA –The Tea Party Express is launching a national campaign in support of the Balanced Budget Amendment through an Article V Convention.

Tea Party Express Executive Director Taylor Budowich said, “The Balanced Budget Amendment is a common sense solution to a very serious problem. Annual deficits are set to skyrocket to historic heights, and our national debt is unsustainable for our children and grandchildren.

“The President’s budget only further confirms that it’s a pipedream to expect his support for fiscal responsibility. Thankfully the Founding Fathers empowered citizens through Article V of the U.S. Constitution as a way to pass a balanced budget amendment with a Convention of States.  When Congress and the President fail to act responsibly, the people have an alternative means of balancing the federal government.

“Congress’ historic shortcomings in passing a Balanced Budget Amendment have forced our hand. It’s time for America to unite around the Article V Convention to cap federal spending once and for all. By petitioning state representatives to act now, America has a realistic path to ensuring responsible spending habits are practiced with our nation’s funds.

“The Congress has the opportunity to pass the Balanced Budget Amendment, and we encourage support for the proposal by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and co-sponsored by every Republican Senator.  Hatch, who was called ‘Mr. Balanced Budget’ by President Ronald Reagan, has been a stalwart supporter of addressing America’s spending excesses through a Balanced Budget Amendment, coming within one vote of gaining passage in a previous Congress.

“But, we are not going to wait for Congress to act.  With only ten more states needed to call an Article V Convention, we’re ready to launch a national campaign that mobilizes citizens in 15 targeted states so we can achieve the necessary 34 states to get a Convention called. Twenty-four states have already passed resolutions calling for a Convention of States.  By empowering the people with the knowledge and tools to take America’s financial future into their own hands, America may finally be able to realize the benefits of a Balanced Budget Amendment,” Budowich concluded.

15 Target States: Oregon, South Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Idaho, Wyoming, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Arizon, and Virginia
