WARNING: Tea Party Response by Senator Mike Lee to State of the Union could cause conservative reawakening

By Donlyn Turnbull

Tea Party Express enthusiastically announced Tuesday that Senator Mike Lee of Utah will be offering the 4th Annual Tea Party response to the President Obama’s upcoming State of the Union address, immediately following the Republican response.

Mike Lee, who was elected to the Senate during the Tea Party wave of success in 2010, has proven to be an effective leader within the Senate, offering tangible solutions in the face of Obama’s empty rhetoric. As we enter into another significant election year, we expect Senator Lee’s response will offer a message relevant to the current challenges we face under this Administration and how we can meet those challenges together.

This past fall in a speech to the Heritage Foundation, Senator Lee discussed key philosophies he believes will bring about reform and advance the conservative agenda. He encouraged a unifying “Great Debate” among the “grassroots and establishment, conservatives and moderates, libertarians and traditionalists, interventionists and non-interventionists, economic conservatives and social conservatives. All are part of our movement,” he said. “And all are vital to our success — so all should be welcome in this debate.”

“We understand that, as it is lived in America, freedom doesn’t mean you’re on your own,” Senator Lee said. “Freedom means we’re all in this together.”

In contrast, President Obama said in his 2013 State of the Union address, “the Constitution makes us not rivals for power but partners for progress.” However, he quickly abandoned this belief and began attacking Republicans for the duration, which only causes further division and offers no real solutions.

And therein lays the difference and the reason behind our excitement of Senator Lee’s upcoming response. Obama in years past has filled his State of the Union address with blame, empty promises, and ineffective policy. Senator Lee will continue to point out how to “advance a larger, positive vision of America,” and to help begin to “craft a practical plan to get us there,” as he mentioned in October of 2013.

Senator Lee states our optimism isn’t simply a message; it’s a conservative principle claiming, “American conservatism, at its core, is about gratitude; and cooperation; and trust; and above all, hope.” It is with these unifying principles that we will challenge the President’s agenda, beginning with Senator Lee and his upcoming Tea Party response.

Past Tea Party responses have included Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain and this past year, Senator Rand Paul. We anticipate an excellent response from Senator Lee and are looking forward to a “Great Debate” that helps unify our country, instead of dividing it.
